Unable to settle your thoughts? Do you feel like you are unable to focus for just a few seconds?

Meditation may be your answer. We all have some sort of internal dialogue going on. However with the current economy and related stresses it brings, a great number of us feel overwhelmed. We have so many thoughts flying in and out of our minds we are unable to maintain focus. What are we going to do about the bills? the kids? my job? money?

This causes so much anxiety and takes us out of the present moment. In reality if our minds were calm like still water we would be better prepared to face the challenges. Meditation can do just that. Time is not something we have a luxury of and trying to fit something else into your schedule might seem impossible.

The good thing is meditation can take as little as ten minutes. And you do not need any special props or area, unless you want to of course.

Merely focusing on your breath by counting each breath or just focusing on an object such as a flower or candle and it’s structure, form and color can take one into a meditative state. Distractions will happen when you first attempt this. It is all part of the process. Just restart your focus. By focusing on just one thing for only ten minutes a day can help to bring clarity and focus back into our crazy lives.

Leg pain? Cramping? Lack of flexibility?

It may be time for a massage. A massage of any type can help relieve the tension in the body. After the first session you will probably notice immediate relief. Our bodies repair injuries with scar tissue. Over time this builds up and restricts our movement. A massage can loosen and limit new scar tissue from forming. This leaves the muscles more pliable and easier to move.

The gentle or sometimes more vigorous deep tissue kneading strokes of a massage help to increase circulation. It also speeds up the removal of waste products and toxins that have accumulated in the body. Better blood flow helps to bring more oxygen and nutrients into the area rejuvenating it and allowing it to work more efficiently.

Our exercise program can also contribute to tight muscles. Runners especially must beware as the hip flexors and hamstrings can easily tighten and then leg pain is not too far behind. Weight lifters usually have tight shoulders and upper backs. Tennis players and golfers have elbow pain and lower back pain. Unfortunately we usually cannot escape and suffer from some sort of muscular pain from our activities.

Massage can help rejuvenate us and get us back to our favorite pasttimes quickly and alleviate the chronic pains and muscle tightness that we endure.

Have you been getting more headaches recently? With the current economic situation and related stresses, headaches for a lot of us are becoming more frequent. The muscles of the upper back and neck tighten from the stress and we are left to deal with the pain.

Now we could just take a couple of pills like our doctor tells us. Or…we could relieve it naturally through massage. A good massage therapist will know how to relax the tense muscles with the strokes of their hands. We could even do a self massage that could ease the pain.

The best area that gives relief to headaches when massaged is called the sub occipital group. It is easy to find. It lies at the base of the skull and runs from ear to ear. Having a partner rub this area can usually bring relief and a lessening of the pain. Just lie face up and have your partner reach under the base of the skull and apply pressure upwards. You may even like to have more pressure at the edge of the skull.

And if you don’t have a partner? Don’t fret, you could lie on the floor and use a tennis ball or two at the sub occipital area. The tennis ball fits nicely at the base of the skull and you can roll from side to side to mimic the same movement.

Finally, stretching the neck can relieve some of the tension as well. Just pull your head down gently with your hands tilting the skull but keeping the neck lifted. Finish by slowly turning your head from side to side.

Meditation refers to a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. Practitioners of this art report increased awareness, focus, and concentration, as well as a more positive outlook in life.

Meditation is most commonly associated with monks, mystics and other spiritual disciplines. However, you don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy its benefits. And you don’t even have to be in a special place to practice it. You could even try it in your own living room!

Although there are many different approaches to meditation, the fundamental principles remain the same. The most important among these principles is that of removing obstructive, negative, and wandering thoughts and fantasies, and calming the mind with a deep sense of focus. This clears the mind of debris and prepares it for a higher quality of activity.

The negative thoughts you have those of noisy neighbors, bossy officemates, that parking ticket you got, and unwanted spam are said to contribute to the “polluting” of the mind, and shutting them out is allows for the “cleansing” of the mind so that it may focus on deeper, more meaningful thoughts.

Some practitioners even shut out all sensory input no sights, no sounds, and nothing to touch and try to detach themselves from the commotion around them. You may now focus on a deep, profound thought if this is your goal. It may seem deafening at first, since we are all too accustomed to constantly hearing and seeing things, but as you continue this exercise you will find yourself becoming more aware of everything around you.

If you find the meditating positions you see on television threatening those with impossibly arched backs, and painful-looking contortions you need not worry. The principle here is to be in a comfortable position conducive to concentration. This may be while sitting cross-legged, standing, lying down, and even walking.

If the position allows you to relax and focus, then that would be a good starting point. While sitting or standing, the back should be straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, the only no-no is slouching and falling asleep.

Loose, comfortable clothes help a lot in the process since tight fitting clothes have a tendency to choke you up and make you feel tense.

The place you perform meditation should have a soothing atmosphere. It may be in your living room, or bedroom, or any place that you feel comfortable in. You might want an exercise mat if you plan to take on the more challenging positions (if you feel more focused doing so, and if the contortionist in you is screaming for release). You may want to have the place arranged so that it is soothing to your senses.

Silence helps most people relax and meditate, so you may want a quiet, isolated area far from the ringing of the phone or the humming of the washing machine. Pleasing scents also help in that regard, so stocking up on aromatic candles isn?t such a bad idea either.

The monks you see on television making those monotonous sounds are actually performing their mantra. This, in simple terms, is a short creed, a simple sound which, for these practitioners, holds a mystic value.

You do not need to perform such; however, it would pay to note that focusing on repeated actions such as breathing, and humming help the practitioner enter a higher state of consciousness.

The principle here is focus. You could also try focusing on a certain object or thought, or even, while keeping your eyes open, focus on a single sight.

One sample routine would be to while in a meditative state silently name every part of you body and focusing your consciousness on that part. While doing this you should be aware of any tension on any part of your body. Mentally visualize releasing this tension. It works wonders.

There are also many meditation CDs on the market that have been scientifically proven to alter your brainwaves in such a way to help you achieve deep meditation. find out more about these here: Meditation CDs.

In all, meditation is a relatively risk-free practice and its benefits are well worth the effort (or non-effort remember we’re relaxing).

Studies have shown that meditation does bring about beneficial physiologic effects to the body. And there has been a growing consensus in the medical community to further study the effects of such. So start now in creating your health and well being…start meditating today!

There are many relaxation techniques that are present that can help you to keep your stress level in check, yet there are certain technique that are better than others. This article focuses on breathing relaxation technique, as this is very easy to follow and is very effective.

Deep breathing involves breathing through your diaphragm as opposed to the regular shallow breathing through the lungs. The best part of deep breathing is that it sends a signal to the brain that the body in a state of complete relaxation. Although deep breathing sounds too easy but there is a correct technique to follow deep breathing. In order to ensure that you get the maximum benefit we are breaking down this technique in to four simple steps.

Step 1. Make yourself comfortable.

It is the first and the fore most thing tat you have to do. Make sure that you are in a comfortable position. You could be sitting anywhere be it in your office chair or couch or you ay be lying down on your couch. The idea here is to let your mind and body relax and calm down. You will know that you are relaxed when your hear rate slows down and your body muscles relax. You can help your mind to relax by listening to some soothing music.

Step 2. Right breathing.

This step makes sure that you are using your diaphragm to breathe instead of your lungs. While breathing place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen, while breathing you should ensure that the hand on the abdomen is moving where as the hand on the chest is not, in case the opposite is happening then try to breathe through your mouth instead of the nose and try and squeeze the stomach muscles as you breathe out.

Step 2. Repeat

Once you are able to make corrections and breathe deeply practice doing it till you are perfect at it. While repeating the breathing try and consciously slow down your inhalations and exaltations. You can at the same time relax your mind by imagining that you are in a soothing atmosphere, you can visualize yourself at a spa or at a recent holiday place where you has gone.

Step 4. Use it at anytime.

After you have mastered the steps mentioned above you can use this technique to relax whenever you want. You can relax before a big presentation or after a tiring day at work. If you practice this regularly you will amazed at the marked reduction in your stress level.

Massages are a great way to relax your body and rejuvenate your mind. It is a very old method used for relaxation. In fact, it is one of the major stress busters used by this generation.

There are many types of massages for various kinds of ailments like arthritis, depression, headaches. The simplest and most popular massage is the head to toe relaxation massage. It can be of three popular types: Swedish, Rolfing and deep tissue massage.

Stress results in tension in the muscles and there is a difficulty in breathing. This results in the decrease of oxygen levels in the body. Massage is ideal for helping those tensed muscles relax and restore the normal levels of oxygen in your body. A relaxing massage session is thus recommended after a hard day at work.

But the reason why most people cannot avail the benefits of massaging is that they do not find the time to go to a specialist regularly. However, in case of time constraints that do not allow you to visit a massage therapist regularly, you can indulge in a bit of self massaging to help yourself relax.

The best thing about self massage is that it does not eat up much time on your busy schedule. It is easy to do, free and relaxing. What more do you ask for? In fact, self massage is the ideal thing for busy people who cannot spare any time for looking after their health. Given below are some simple self massages that you can give yourself anywhere ? at work, while waiting for a taxi or on the go.

1. Progressive Muscle Relaxation

During a lunch break or any five to ten minute break, give yourself the progressive muscle relaxation. At first, take a deep breath or two and get relaxed. Then, with each breath you draw, tense your muscles. As you exhale, relax those muscles. This very simple exercise will help you relax a great deal. Begin this with your toes and go up to your neck for a complete relaxation experience.

2. Foot Massage

You can give yourself a foot massage any time of the day. You just need to be in a comfortable position where you will be able to reach your feet. Begin with stroking your feet smoothly from toe to ankle. Then proceed to massaging your sole. In case you wear heels regularly, a sole massage is very important. You can use your knuckles for this. Then massage each and every toe separately.

The purpose of massaging is to ensure that you get relaxed. While giving yourself any kind of massage, there is one thing that you need to keep in mind: all that massaging requires is a simple and straightforward approach. If you have a headache, massage your temples. All you need to do is release the tension in the part of your body that is aching. This simple thing goes a long way in ensuring that you give great massages to yourself!

If used properly, the human mind can be a potent tool. The mind is of primary focus for visualization techniques, which help in relaxing the mind ? which is powerful enough to affect both the physical and the psychological aspects of the body. Critics of such visualization techniques are many, but the key is to know how to successfully use the technique to benefit from it. This technique might seem difficult to master, but if mastered provides fantastic results.

In this article we?ll look at color therapy and guided imagery, two key elements of visualization techniques for relaxation.

Color Therapy

Research has proven that color therapy affects the immune system and the nerves in a positive way, keeping the mind healthy. In this technique varying colors are used to affect the mind in different positive ways, helping relieve stress. If the blue color associated with the serenity of the sea and the sky is used to help the mind relax, then the more vibrant orange or yellow, signifying the sun is used for generating greater energy levels.

Deep breathing exercises are often used alongside the color therapy, to make the process doubly effective. Here?s how to go about it: First, make your body comfortable and relaxed, then with eyes closed take in deep breaths and imagine the color blue filling up your body. Visualize the color spreading from your feet upwards, covering your body and then making your surroundings turn blue, till it would seem that you are floating on the calm, blue sea. After 5-10 minutes start exhaling gently and visualize the blue streaming out of your system. With each exhalation you shall feel more and more calm and relaxed.

Guided Imagery

This is yet another great way to relieve stress, and the process is quite similar to color therapy, though not identical. While color imagery uses colors and their properties and human emotions as the basis for affecting the mind positively, guided imagery uses the power of visualization of a peaceful environment to revitalize or calm your mind.

Some people consider guided imagery to be a part of a meditation technique, but it can be a brilliant method of relaxation too. It functions by drawing from your own experiences, which are then recreated in your mind and transporting you back to that emotional state you were in. The experiences can be anything from family vacations to something much simpler but meaningful. With practice you will be able to visualize those happy moments regularly when you need to calm yourself down or recharge yourself.

Start by being in a comfortable position. You can listen to soothing music like the chirping of birds or a babbling brook to help you relax and stimulate your visualization. Close your eyes and start imagining the scene, any scene that you feel most comfortable and happy in. Visualize each bit in details - the feel of the grass or the color of the sand while emptying every other thought.

With constant practice you?ll be able to master these techniques easily.

Today’s life is no cramped and so hectic that it is very difficult to find time for anything. There is no time for even some pressing issues. But it is extremely important that you find time for relaxing yourself.

Deep breathing and relaxing keeps various problems at bay. Right from headaches to insomnia, for cancer to diarrhea, relaxing can help avoid most of these problems. Also, instant techniques can be learnt to reduce the stress level and anxiety whenever one feels that he is in a vulnerable position.

Visualizing is very important, and it involves picturing something in your mind which would give you comfort. It is like painting a picture over which you have full control. Besides, it helps you to relax as well. Scripts for relaxation visualization are many, and you can learn them and decide which one is well suited to you. But as the case with anything new, it needs regular practice to master the art. Given the health benefits and relaxation that it offers, it certainly is a must and a good try and definitely worth the effort you put into it.

Basically, relaxation visualization means imagining something while doing nothing at all. This gives you pleasure and drives away stress and anxiety.

For instance, picture yourself in an exquisite forest. Think about the birds who are making merry, and the sun that extends its rays on your face. This basically is a very peaceful situation and it helps to calm down your mind and aid relaxation. Studies also suggest that this actually stimulates your immune system and helps to avoid cancerous cells to develop. The studies have also concluded that if your focus lies on feeling strong, it brings down the chances of cancer, and keeps side effects of those recovering from it, at bay.

Given below is a script for the purpose of relaxation visualization.

Go and sit on a cozy and comfortable chair at office or in the house. Then relax all the muscles of your body. Then deep breathe in a steady and calm manner. After you feel a bit relaxed, shut your eyes to the worldly problems and imagine yourself in a cheerful mood at a serene and a beautiful place, for instance, a cottage house. Imagine yourself just relaxing on along chair, having no task to accomplish, and your kids playing around. The atmosphere is calm and you are in a relaxed state.

After that, concentrate on a cloud that appears in the shape of a rabbit. Picture the clouds moving in the direction of the air that is blowing around. You will feel at peace now. Then get up from the chair and walk towards a nearby sea. Imagine diving in the cool water, which makes you completely refreshed. When you come out of it, it seems to be the best days of your life. Then things will work well for you and there will be peace all over.
